St. James Park
The most central Royal Park is also one of London's most charming green spaces. St. James Park may be small, but the waterfowl lake that runs through its centre is a source of endless delight, with its splay-footed, barking coots and three mischievous pelicans.
A few years ago, one of the pelicans was caught on camera as it swallowed a passing pigeon; in general, though, the birds stick to a diet of fresh fish. If you want to see them gulping their lunch down, feeding time is at around 2.30pm daily.
Buckingham Palace overlooks the western edge of the park, and Horse Guards Parade opens up to the east. Between them, Inn The Park (7451-9999) is a well-sited all-day eateries; breakfast on buttermilk pancakes on the lovely terrace, pop into the self-service cafe for lunch or dine on seasonal British dishes in the restaurants.
